Biography
Professor Lee Elliot Major is the country’s first Professor of Social Mobility. Appointed by the University of Exeter to be a global leader in the field, his work is dedicated to improving the prospects of children and young people from under-resourced backgrounds. He is focused on the impact and dissemination of research, working closely with schools, universities, global employers and Government policy makers. He is Visiting Fellow at the LSE’s International Inequalities Institute and an Associate Member, Nuffield College, University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and serves on the Strategic Advisory Network of the Economic and Social Research Council. He was formerly Chief Executive of the Sutton Trust. Lee regularly appears in national broadcast and print media, and is an award-winning book author. He has served on several Government advisory bodies. He has a PhD in theoretical physics and was first in his family to enter higher education. He was awarded an OBE in the 2019 Queen’s Honours.
