Neighbourhoods
The Neighbourhoods programme looks at economic activity at the local level, and how it relates to people's lives and to the broader functioning and outcomes of cities and economies.
Amenities, including public services such as schools, policing and parks, are central to our research on Neighbourhoods. These affect where people choose to live, how they interact with each other and how productive and happy they are. Also central is housing: the quantity and quality delivered, as well as its location, connectivity and the factors which affect whether people become homeowners or rent. Finally, we study neighbourhoods not only in developed economies, but also in developing economies, where salient issues such as informality, the rapid growth of cities and environmental hazards require policies to secure property rights, access and mitigate disamenities.
