Every year, nearly half a million people are murdered at the hands of others around the world. Common belief attributes this to either inadequate deterrence from the criminal justice system, or limited economic opportunities for the underprivileged (root causes). That is to say, the issue is usually seen as a matter of incentives, or what psychologists call deliberate, conscious "System 2" thinking.

This talk contends instead that interpersonal violence often originates from the type of rapid, instinctive "System 1" cognition that occurs beneath the level of consciousness. This behavioural science perspective not only changes our understanding of the causes of violence but also suggests an entirely different approach to solving the issue.
