The biography, as released by Whitehall, of Professor Sir David Metcalf, who has been appointed as the first director of labour market enforcement, lists several worthy previous public sector appointments. However, his university, the London School of Economics, paints a slightly more rounded picture, pointing out that he owns a leg in a racehorse and has been a steward at Kempton and Plumpton racecourses.
