A large empirical literature documents that the adoption of IT requires changes in the company organization and induces greater productivity gains in the best managed companies, because managerial and IT practices are complementary. However, companies in Southern Europe have systematically worse performance in terms of management efficiency. This can be seen from Figure 2, which uses data from the World Management Survey (WMS), developed by Nick Bloom, Raffaella Sadun and John Van Reenen.
