Biography

Dr Ihsaan Bassier is a research economist at the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics working on projects related to monopsony. He recently graduated with his PhD in economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, focusing on employer power, inequality and spillovers. He is affiliated with the Southern African Labour and Development Research Unit at the University of Cape Town, recently as part of pandemic policy work with the South African presidency on cash transfers and employment stimulus effects.

Current areas of research include:

  • Labour market inequality: Firm wage premia; Monopsonistic Competition; Income distribution.
  • Trade unions: Sectoral wage bargaining; Minimum wages; Spillovers.
  • Development: Poverty; Informality; Cash transfers; Employment stimulus effects.
