Dr. Hanna Virtanen is a Chief Research Scientist and an Academy Research Fellow at ETLA Economic Research, Helsinki, Finland. She is an Associate at the Centre for Economic Performance at LSE. Hanna is also a Research Fellow at IZA and a co-editor in Kansantaloudellinen aikakauskirja (KAK), which is a Finnish language journal of the Finnish Economic Association.

Current areas of research include:

  • Education and family formation: schooling paths, fertility, and social exclusion
  • Adult education: information interventions, labor market careers, health outcomes, and cost-effectiveness of adult education
  • Education and skills: cognitive and non-cognitive skills
  • Vocational education: economics turbulence, occupational restructuring and labor market outcomes; social connections and cohesion; sibling spillovers
