Biography
Thomas Monk is a PhD Candidate in Economics at the London School of Economics, based in the Labour Programme at the Centre for Economic Performance and an affiliate of the LSE Data Science Institute, where he is supervised by Alan Manning, Guy Michaels and John Van Reenen. He is a labour economist studying technological change and its effects on the structure of the labour market, and builds large novel datasets to do so - including a machine-learning digitisation of every edition of the Dictionary of Occupational Titles from 1939 to 1991.
Current areas of research include:
- Labour economics, technological change and innovation: tasks & technology; automation and AI; immigration and labour supply.
- Economic history: historical labour markets; long-run occupational change; text as data.
