CEP Announcement:
In Memoriam: Ghazala Azmat (1979 - 2025)
10 June 2025
We are deeply saddened to hear that CEP associate Ghazala Azmat, Professor of Economics at Sciences Po, passed away on Saturday, 7 June. Ghazala was a leading applied microeconomist, known for her work on labour markets, education, gender inequality, and organisational behaviour.
Ghazala was both an undergraduate at LSE and received her PhD in economics from LSE. She held academic positions at Queen Mary University of London and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra before joining Sciences Po. Ghazala had been an associate in CEP's Labour Markets programme since 2011. She was also a Research Fellow at CEPR, CESifo, and IZA, and a Junior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France. She was chair of the European Economic Association’s Standing Committee on Women in Economics, director of the Organizational Economics Programme at CEPR, and an associate editor of Economica.
Ghazala was an inspiring colleague, always willing to give her time to others. The Centre and wider economics community greatly benefitted from her approach, which combined academic rigour with high policy relevance, particularly aimed at disadvantaged groups. Her public policy work at CEP addressed gender gaps in the labour market, university funding reform, and broader socioeconomic challenges.
Ghazala is survived by her husband and coauthor, Vicente Cuñat, and their two young children. Our thoughts are with them.
Everyone at the CEP will miss Ghazala greatly.
