About this event

We study how ethnic representation within the police force affects the outcomes of youth in minority communities. Using Swedish administrative data, we identify the first police officer from a given ethnic group and neighborhood and estimate the effects on others from the same community. We implement an event-study difference-in-differences design, comparing outcomes before and after the officer enters the police force relative to similar communities that have not experienced such representation. We examine educational attainment, labor market outcomes, and criminal activity. The results show positive effects on compulsory school grades but no evidence of effects on crime. These findings suggest that representation within a key state institution can influence educational trajectories in marginalized communities.

Participants are expected to adhere to the CEP Events Code of Conduct.
