CEP announcement:
Daniel Chandler awarded the Voltaire Lecture Medal
12 September 2024
Congratulations to Daniel Chandler who has been awarded the 2024 Voltaire Lecture Medal for his work on how to create a fair society.
Chandler, research director of the LSE’s Programme on Cohesive Capitalism and a CEP research associate, was awarded the medal by the Humanists UK, following his Voltaire Lecture in which he argued that the current political current lacks a unified vision for a better society and proposed measures for revitalising democracy and restructuring capitalism.
In awarding the medal Andrew Copson, chief executive of Humanists UK, said Chandler had been given the award for: “his clear and captivating prospectus we could all look to when trying to bring about a society, where rational thinking and kindness prevail”.
The Voltaire Lecture explores any aspect of scientific or philosophical thought or human activity as affected by or with particular reference to humanism.
The Voltaire medal is given to someone who has made a significant contribution in one of these fields.
Chandler’s book Free and Equal: What Would a Fair Society Look Like made the FT’s summer reading list being described by chief economics commentator Martin Wolf as making “an important contribution” to building a blueprint for a better society.
