David was a renowned academic who shaped the way economics and industrial relations were thought about at the LSE, where he worked for over 40 years. He was editor of the BJIR between 1986 and 2000. This 14-year period represented a significant era for the journal, during which it expanded its influence in labour economics and industrial relations research. In 1990 he co-founded the Centre for Labour Economics, which later became the Centre for Economic Performance, one of the pre-eminent Centres for research on labour economics in the world.

As well as being a leading scholar of labour economics and industrial relations he was a founding member of the Low Pay Commission, the first Chair of the Migration Advisory Committee, a member of the Senior Salaries Review Board and the first Director of Labour Market Enforcement in the UK.

This conference will feature papers which reflect David's spirit and ethos through theoretically-informed empirical analyses of economic and policy-related industrial relations issues.
