About this event

Geographic variation in intergenerational income mobility is widely documented, yet the mechanisms driving these differences remain poorly understood. This paper studies how educational institutions and local labor-market conditions jointly shape intergenerational mobility using population-wide administrative panel data from Norway. We exploit plausibly exogenous variation from three education reforms?expansion of compulsory schooling, higher education supply, and subsidized childcare?as well as two major labor-market shocks: the discovery of offshore oil resources and increased import competition from China. Overall, the results show that institutional education reforms and labor-market shocks can substantially alter patterns of intergenerational mobility.
