Slum Demolitions without Rehousing: Long-run Evidence from Victorian London

Guy Michaels (CEP, LSE)

Tuesday 09 December 2025 13:30 - 14:45

SAL 2.04, 2nd Floor Conference Room, Sir Arthur Lewis Building, LSE, 32 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3PH

About this event

What are the long-term consequences of slum demolitions for slum residents that are not rehoused? We assemble new data on 59 slums that were targeted for demolition in Victorian London. Of these, 30 were demolished and their landlords (but not tenants) were compensated. The other 29, which were similar, were not demolished so provide a counterfactual. Using linked historical census records, we follow the residents of demolished and undemolished slums and their children over 30-40 years, and study implications for mortality, residential relocation, employment, social networks, human capital formation, and social mobility.

Participants are expected to adhere to the CEP Events Code of Conduct.
