What are the prospects for inflation? Is the level of public debt now dangerous? And will commercial wars between nations blight our future?


Professor Olivier Blanchard, former Chief Economist at the IMF, will explore how current global instability poses challenges to economic wellbeing.

Speakers

Olivier Blanchard is the Robert M. Solow Professor of Economics emeritus at MIT and C. Fred Bergsten Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. After obtaining his PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1977, he taught at Harvard University, and returned to MIT in 1982. He was chair of the economics department from 1998 to 2003. In 2008, he took a leave of absence to be the economic counselor and director of the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund.

Richard Layard (Chair) is a labour economist who has worked for most of his life on how to reduce unemployment and inequality. He is also one of the first economists to work on happiness, and his main current interest is how better mental health could improve our social and economic life. He is founder-director of LSE's Centre for Economic Performance, and is co-director of the Centre's programme on Community Wellbeing.
