About this event

A workshop on Industrial Policy in advanced economies in the 21st Century, bringing together leading academics and policy makers.

Industrial Policy is enjoying a resurgence in advanced economies. Policy makers are putting forward policies to provide specific support for certain sectors, technologies or types of firms. Policy approaches include the setting of strategic objectives, facilitation of loose networks, active financial support, modifications to competition law and state ownership of key assets. This follows a period where such vertical targeting has been frowned upon because it was expected to lead to rent seeking, white elephants, waste of taxpayers’ money and distortion of competition and factor allocation.

This event was organised with generous support from the Bertelsman Stiftung and EU Horizon 2020 Watson project.

Organisers: Prof Giammario Impullitti, Prof Ralf Martin and Prof Henry Overman.
