Flight from Russia

Antonio Avila-Uribe and Dzhamilya Nigmatulina

In addition to the human tragedy in Ukraine, Russia's invasion has led to a series of economic, social, and political events in Russia itself. This column uses outgoing flight prices before and after the invasion on 24 February 2022 to understand how those in Russia reacted to the war. It finds that flight prices increased sharply following the invasion in February and again in September 2022 following a further military mobilisation. The initial price increase reflects a combination of higher demand and decreased flight availability, but later spikes more clearly reflect demand-side factors.
