Attracting Multinationals to Boost Development? Some Evidence from Costa Rica

Costa Rica's global image is typically dominated by sights of mountains, beaches and volcanoes, with the smell of coffee in the background. It is less known (probably because it is a small country) that Costa Rica has experienced a noteworthy structural transformation in the past decades, switching from a primarily agriculturally based economy in the late 60s to a predominantly service-oriented economy. While this transformation slowed down during the 80s (the so-called "lost decade" for many Latin American countries, caused by significant economic contractions), it caught up during the 90s and has not stopped ever since.
