Dr Costa-Font’s main research and teaching is broadly on the economic analysis of social policies, social behaviour and the design of European social protection institutions (mainly dealing with health and old age needs). He works at LSE as an Associate Professor (Reader) of Political Economy in the Department of Social Policy and the European Institute. Joan has held various visiting and research posts at Harvard University, Boston College, Oxford University and the University of Munich among other universities. He teaches ‘Economics of European Social Policy’(SA4F7) and 'Political and Fiscal Integration and Disintegration in the European Union' (EU439). Outside LSE he is affiliated to CESIfo.

Current Areas of Research:

1. Social behaviour formation (Social Economics). The role of ideas, esteem culture, identity in incentivising social and health related behaviours. The interaction between social and pecuniary incentives. Social personality and risk related behaviours.

2.Political and fiscal welfare state design (Political Economy). Interaction between public and private health and long term care insurance. Partnership insurance. Decentralization, Europeanization, globalization, liberalisation, provider choice and democratization of health care systems.

3. Life course and intergenerational transmission of wellbeing ( Economics of Lifestyles). Health inequality and the sources of health and wellbeing advantage. Health mobility. Well-being and wealth at old Age. Adoptee studies of health transmission.
