CEP Announcement:
Jo Blanden awarded OBE in King's birthday honours

16 June 2025

Congratulations to Jo Blanden, professor of economics at the University of Surrey and an associate in CEP’s education and skills programme, who has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2025.

Professor Blanden has been made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to economics.

Professor Blanden was a full-time researcher at CEP from 2000 to 2005, completing her PhD at UCL during that time. She has been at the University of Surrey since 2005 where she is associate head for research and innovation in the school of social sciences. Her work has shaped debates on social mobility, including contributing to the first robust evidence of a fall in intergenerational mobility in Britain. She has also published work on international comparisons of social mobility.

Commenting on the award, she said: “I’m surprised and honoured to receive this award. I’ve always been passionate about using rigorous research to improve understanding and help shape fairer policies, especially when it comes to children’s life changes. I would like to thank everyone who has supported my work professionally and personally.”
