Overview: The LSE Growth Commission's Report provides an authoritative contribution to the formulation and implementation of a long-term growth strategy for the UK. The Report Investing in Prosperity: Skills, Infrastructure and Innovation, is based on evidence taken in public session during 2012 from leading academics, business people and policy-makers from the UK and overseas and on the analysis of an LSE research team supporting the Commissioners.
The Commissioners are: Philippe Aghion, Tim Besley, John Browne, Francesco Caselli, Richard Lambert, Rachel Lomax, Chris Pissarides, Nick Stern and John Van Reenen They conclude that despite the UK economy's uncertain outlook, the tarnished reputation of the City and the longest drop in output since the Great Depression, not all is lost. But only with major reform of the UK's economic structures and policies can the country's strengths in competitive product markets, flexible labour markets, independent regulation and good levels of higher education be built on to underpin growth. The Commissioners make strong recommendations, notably for policies on skills, infrastructure and innovation.
