About the Skills for All Research Programme

Funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Additional financial support provided by the Anglo-German Foundation and the Economic and Social Research Council/

The programme investigates under-achievement among British young people in school and subsequent marginalisation on the labour market. Research records and analyses the voice of young people and presents and authoritative survey of disengagement among 14-16 year olds based on an ESRC-funded seminar series.

Our research for this programme analyses the relative strengths and weaknesses of full and part-time 16-19 provision for youth with below average GCSEs and maps qualifications and labour market outcomes for this group. We examine the challenge of finding a way through the maze of vocational qualifications in England and make proposals for simplifying and strengthening the vocational route.

Much of our work focuses on the potential of apprenticeship and other work-based learning. We ask We examine British apprenticeship in the light of European best practice, discover how companies in Britain and Germany procure specialist ICT skills and compare British performance in raising qualification levels over time and across countries.

Please read and comment on our work, view our Power Point presentations and invite us to speak to your organisation about any or all of our research and its policy implications.
