The State of Working Britain

Richard Dickens, Paul Gregg and Jonathan Wadsworth - the editors of The State of Working Britain which examines the impact of New Labour policies on the labour market since 1998

In 1999 the Centre for Economic Performance published the State of Working Britain, (Manchester University Press). Leading analysts assessed how the British labour market had evolved over the preceding twenty years and outlined the key labour market problems facing the recently elected Labour Government. The Centre has now produced a follow up to this volume, edited by Richard Dickens, Paul Gregg and Jonathan Wadsworth focusing on developments in the long recovery beginning in 1993. We concentrate on areas that did not receive full attention in our original book, namely trades unions, lone parents and ethnic minorities. We also examine at the latest evidence on the impact of the National Minimum Wage and the Working Families Tax Credit. Our intention is to produce a fuller assessment of labour market developments sometime in 2003.
