1. Wage inequalities between women and men

Our analysis aims at exploring wage inequalities between women and men. The gender gap in all our societies raises two very important questions about economic performance. The first one is concerned about distributional efficiency of labour factor. The gender wage gap represents a persistent failure to utilize the talents and human capital investments of women workers, and hence a lost growth potential. The second raises problems concerning the qualitative aspects of economic performance. Is a higher level of economic growth an adequate measure of well-being, when there is such a persistent and large gap in welfare between two groups of citizens? ESES data provide a unique source to make a systematic comparison of the situation in the different countries in order to measure the impact of different kinds of pay system, part-time working, and employment status on women’s relative position.
