Frequently Asked Questions
What data is available? The LISSY system currently provides access to European Structure of Earnings Survey [ESES] microdata. These are the files that are submitted to the Eurostat Unit for Labour Statistics by member states. Key tabulations from the data can be found in Eurostat's New Cronos databasehttp://www.esds.ac.uk/international/support/user_guides/eurostat/cronos.asp Data is only available for countries that have agreed to provide access to their data via the LEED-LISSY system. Microdata for some other countries can be accessed in Luxembourg through Eurostat's safe setting. For more information http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page?_pageid=1913,47567825,1913_65204321&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL The ESES is a linked employer-employee survey with data at both unit level and the employee level. Employees can be linked to their places of work via a unique id. The aim of the ESES was to provide accurate and harmonised data on earnings in EU member states. The ESES 2002 covers enterprises with at least 10 employees in the areas of economic activity defined by sections C-K of NACE Rev.1.1. The inclusion of sections L-O was optional for 2002, as was the inclusion of enterprises with fewer than 10 employees. For more information on exactly what is available in ESES please see the documentation in the Data Support section of this website. How does the system work? The system is an adaptation of the software that has been used by the Luxembourg Income Study to provide access to household data for the past 25 years. The LEED-LISSY system (which you may have seen referred to as the PiEP-LISSY or LSE-LISSY system) allows users to send standard Stata analyses via email to a secure server at Eurostat, the programs are run on the data in Luxembourg and the output returned via email following security checking. Though the software provides for analyses to be run in Stata, SAS or SPSS, the LEED-LISSY system currently only allows Stata due to financial constraints. What restrictions are there on data access?Due to security restrictions imposed by the National Statistical Institutes we cannot currently provide the following analyses:
For a full list of blocked analyses please see the user guide on the Data Support page. How do I access the data?Institutional PermissionsAccess to the European Structure of Earnings Survey via the LISSY system is only available to researchers employed by a registered institution.A list of registered institutions can be found under the section: Which institutions are registered to access the ESES data? Any academic institution and some other European research institutions can apply to become a registered institution. As with standard Eurostat microdata access rules, we recommend that the institutional representative who signs the contract must be the chancellor of the university (or the vice-chancellor for research), so that all faculties, and not only the one making the request, can access the data; but this depends of course on the internal organisation of the university. We are happy to discuss alternatives, however a researcher cannot sign on their own behalf even if they are head of department. For more information contact the project data manager Tanvi Desai t.desai@lse.ac.uk +44(0)207.955-7740 Individual PermissionsOnce there is an established institutional contract all individual researchers who wish to access the data will be asked to complete a personal license agreement and a registration form. Once these are received by the data manager the user account will be activated and the researcher may access the data. What if I am a student at the institution, but not employed? If you are registered as a student with an institution, but not employed you can be granted access provided you are guaranteed by your supervisor who must be employed by the registered institution.Which institutions are registered to access the ESES data?Institution Country Johannes Kepler Universität, Linz Austria Université Libre de Bruxelles Belgium University of British Columbia Canada LEST France (Laboratoire d'Économie et de Sociologie du Travail) IZA Bonn Germany Economic and Social Research Institute Ireland Università Cattolica di Santa Cuore di Milano Italy Università Bocconi [Diparteminto di Economia Politica] Italy Università degli Studi di Milano [Facoltà di Economia] Italy Banca d'Italia Italy Universitetet i Oslo [Institute for Social Research] Norway Polish Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs Poland Universitat d'Alacant Spain Euskal Herriko Unibersitatea Spain Universidad Carlos III de Madrid Spain Essex University [Institute for Social and Economic Research] UK London School of Economics UK Berkeley [Institute for Industrial Relations] USPlease note that in some cases the whole institution has permission to access the data, in others, only a specific department has permission. If only a department/section of the institution has access permissions you must be employed by that particular section to gain access to the data. How can I make my ESES data available via LISSY?If you wish to make ESES data available via LISSY please contact the project data managerTanvi Desai t.desai@lse.ac.uk +44(0)207.955-7740 The current arrangement is that a representative of the country who wishes to make their ESES data available via LISSY must fill in a form that is delivered to Eurostat granting them permission to allow the data to be transferred to the LSE server in the Eurostat secure server room. National representatives are then given a period to test the security of their data on the system. Additional security blocks are installed where necessary and the data is then released to researchers. What do I do if I want to use LISSY to make my data available? To use LISSY as a remote data access tool please contact the software developer Marc Cigrang of HAL computing [marc.cigrang@pt.lu] |
